Psalm 14

  1. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
  2. The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
  3. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
  4. Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the Lord.
  5. There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.
  6. Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the Lord is his refuge.
  7. Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the Lord bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

Psalm 14 begins by condemning the folly of those who deny the existence of God. The psalmist highlights the moral corruption and depravity that often accompany such disbelief, asserting that those who reject God’s existence have strayed from the path of righteousness and are incapable of performing good deeds.

God, from His heavenly perspective, observes humanity’s collective deviation from His ways. Despite His search for understanding and righteousness among mankind, He finds that all have turned away and become morally polluted, lacking in goodness.

The psalmist laments the ignorance and callousness of evildoers who oppress the righteous and show no reverence for God. These wicked individuals, who exploit and mistreat the vulnerable, fail to recognize the presence and power of God in their midst.

However, amidst the darkness and despair, there is hope for the righteous. The psalmist affirms that God is with the generation of the righteous, offering them protection and refuge in times of trouble. Even as the poor and oppressed are shamed and marginalized by the wicked, they find solace in their trust in God as their ultimate source of strength and deliverance.

The psalm concludes with a fervent prayer for the salvation and restoration of Israel. The psalmist expresses longing for the day when God will bring His people out of captivity and oppression, leading to rejoicing and gladness among the descendants of Jacob and Israel.

In summary, Psalm 14 serves as a poignant reflection on the folly of rejecting God and the moral decay that ensues. It underscores the contrast between the wickedness of those who deny God’s existence and the righteousness of those who trust in Him, ultimately affirming hope in God’s salvation and deliverance for His people.
