Psalm 1

  1. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
  2. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
  3. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
  4. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
  5. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
  6. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Psalm 1 serves as an introduction to the Book of Psalms, setting the tone for the entire collection of prayers and songs. It contrasts the destinies of the righteous and the wicked, highlighting the blessings that come from walking in God’s ways.

The psalmist begins by describing the blessedness of those who refrain from following the advice of the wicked, avoiding participation in sinful activities, and resisting the influence of those who mock God. Instead, their delight is in the law of the Lord, and they meditate on His teachings day and night.

The imagery of a tree planted by streams of water depicts the flourishing and stability of the righteous person. They are fruitful in their endeavors, and their spiritual vitality remains unwavering, ensuring success in all they do.

In contrast, the fate of the wicked is likened to chaff, which is blown away by the wind. They will not stand in the judgment nor find acceptance among the righteous. Ultimately, the Lord knows and approves of the path of the righteous, while the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

In summary, Psalm 1 emphasizes the importance of aligning one’s life with God’s will, finding delight in His law, and experiencing the blessings of righteousness. It serves as a call to faithful obedience and a reminder of the contrasting outcomes for those who choose to follow or reject God’s ways.
